the dress

I originally wrote this post on March 18th, but just now got around to adding the photos and finishing it up.

This afternoon we went to Target to pick up Anya's dress for Mark and Katie's wedding this summer. When I told her that they had picked out a dress for her, she said, "Is it pretty? Is it plain white? Because plain white isn't pretty." Don't know where she got that idea, but the other days she also said, "Black isn't pretty because it's not a color. It's just a decoration." Anyhow, back to the subject...I told her it was light yellow and she said, "Why isn't it pink?" She wasn't upset that it was yellow, she was just so matter-of-fact about it.

We found the dress in her size and then found her some white shoes to go with it. She really liked the dress and the shoes and was so excited, but as she usually does when she gets excited, she gets shy and acts funny. And as usual when she's excited about something we buy (shoes, granola bars, kid dental floss, sponges, etc.), she wants to hold it through the store, put it on the conveyor belt herself, and then carry it all the way home. And with something as exciting as a dress and shoes, she also gets to look forward to coming home and trying them on.

She was so excited for Steve to come home and see it after dinner. My aunt Jeanie is here visiting right now, too, so Anya had quite an audience. But all of us watching and getting ready with cameras also made her embarrassed and shy. I think she really liked the dress, but her initial reaction was to be super shy and act crazy.

When she first tried to stand up after putting on the shoes, she went all limp and fell on the floor in shyness. (Oh yes, and she insisted on wearing her yellow socks with the shoes. Not sure about that look, but we'll work on it.)

She eventually got over it and was twirling around in front of a mirror and requesting that pictures be taken to send to Mark and Katie so they could see it. This was a huge turn around. It was adorable how excited she was, not to mention how adorable she looked in the dress.

She really enjoyed looking at herself in the mirror.

And then she wanted to pose with her matching yellow dinosaur sponges.

And any good photo shoot ends in looking at all the photos. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the photos or video Jeanie took, so I'll have to get those later.

Wow! Anya looks like she shot up three inches at least since I last saw her. Or maybe the dress just makes her look taller.
