last day of school
It's here. The last day of school. The last morning before the summer begins and I welcome my children back home. Back home to peaceful awakening and quiet mornings. Back home to lunches eaten together off of a plate. Back home to sunny afternoons and air conditioning breaks. Back home to summer evenings with less bedtime rules. It's here.
This moment of quiet and anticipation during my last two hours at home before dismissal is difficult to describe. It's full of hope and sadness. The turning off of phone alarms for early morning waking and midday and afternoon pickups. The freedom from a schedule not my own. The gratefulness for being able to have this time with my children. The thankfulness that they are all choosing less activities and more time at home this summer. The excitement and fear of the days stretching out before us. The worry that we won't be able to reset a difficult morning by going to school and starting over at the end of the day. The anticipation of the wonderful togetherness and the overwhelming and seemingly endless fuel for disagreement and whining. The joy in having watched my children accomplish so much this year. The sadness that another year has passed. My own to-do lists not crossed off. The plans of what I could have or should have done this year while they were away. It's here.
The summer brings with it promises of time together, but also that sadness of children growing forward and never standing still. My daughter approaching her final year of elementary school. My son still finding his place and his voice in the world. My baby leaving the peacefulness of preschool into the unknown of kindergarten. We have so much to look forward to and so much to reflect on and be grateful for. Yes, the days are long, but the years are short. It's here.
