Tiling the basement shower

In case you didn't know, last September we began the long process of finishing our basement. I should actually say that Steve and Mark began the actual work and I was mainly around to help make decisions, ask questions, keep Anya out of the saw dust and save her from the scary power tools. If you have seen our basement at any previous stage of our project, you would know what a major accomplishment it is that we are tiling the basement shower.

Mark started setting the tile while we were in Ohio and then gave us a good lesson on how to continue on our own when we got back. We have almost finished two complete walls by now and it is hard, but we are getting much better. We are laying slate tiles which are very uneven and not uniform, so it takes a while to get them to look decent. We are definitely not professionals, but it is actually looking pretty good. We think we will be really pleased with the final product once the grout hopefully covers up a small amount of our inconsistencies. It is fun because it is one of the first places in the basement where I have been doing real work and getting my hands dirty. Maybe next time you come to visit us, you will be showering down there. Well, you might still want to wait a few months...let's be honest, you can just stay in our guest room upstairs and take a tour of the basement. Don't worry, we won't put you to work unless you really insist.

Now you might be wondering how we kept Anya occupied during this tiling project. We accomplished some of it while she was asleep and today Mark was here to entertain her for part of it. But other than that, she was right in the middle of everything and not always happy about it. She was most happy when she got her own bucket of water and rag to help wash off the tiles. This helping quickly developed into her slinging water around the entire room. We decided not to care because she wasn't really hurting anything and she was having so much fun. I'm sure you'll see more of this theme in previous posts. Cleaning up a big mess or a messy child later on is often much easier than keeping a child clean and happy while you are trying to get her to amuse herself while you are busy doing something nearby.
